Chapter Fifteen
Time Tripping
*Teaser*

Darkness arose from the ground and swirled up around Ranma and Ukyo. It enveloped them. Everything was black, and there was the sound of howling wind, and a sensation of falling. Then everything grew quiet.
Ranma found herself sitting on a cold stone floor. The darkness slowly faded to a dim, dusty grey, and she noticed walls of stone and a solid wooden door bound with iron. She was in a room roughly ten feet by ten feet. There was a single, small window, more than thirty feet high, through which shone a very faint light.
Ranma shifted. Metal scraped on stone, and Ranma realised that her feet were chained together. She frowned.
"Ranchan?" Ukyo called out. Something moved in the darkness, and there was the clink of metal and the scratch of dry leaves. Ukyo cursed.
"Are you chained up too?" Ranma asked.
"Yes!" Ukyo growled. "Ranchan, where are we?"
"I don't know," Ranma said. "In a dungeon of some sort, I think."

Then her arms were about Ranma's shoulders, and her head buried in Ranma's chest.
        "Oh Ranchan! I'm so scared!"
Ranma squirmed in Ukyo's embrace, and then managed to pry her free.
"Uchan," Ranma said, "we don't got time for that. We gotta find a way out of this place...."

"Ranchan, why don't you like me?"
"What? What are you talking about?"
"You always push me away," Ukyo said. "Why don't you like me?"
"Of course I like you, Uchan. You're...."
"One of your friends?" Ukyo quickly interjected. "You know I want to be more than that, Ranchan!"
        Ranma looked away.
        Ukyo frowned.
"Is it because of Akane? I know your parents wanted you to marry her. But are you really so attached to her?"
"This has nothing to do with Akane," Ranma growled. "Anyway, she was even more opposed to our engagement than me."
"Then why? And why are you still pretending to be a girl?"
"You're the one who wouldn't trade dorm rooms with me...."
"That's just an excuse. Surely if you wanted to you could have straightened this mess out by now. I know that telling the truth now would have consequences, but we've all got to face up to consequences at some point.
        "Uchan, I...."
"Don't think I didn't see the look in your face when you were with your mother," Ukyo said. "I know how much her approval means to you. But surely there must be another way. You're a guy, Ranma. I'm a girl, and I'm engaged to a guy, regardless of what your parents may currently think."
"But I am a girl," Ranma said.
"No you're not! You know it, and I know it!"
Ranma stopped. She turned and locked eyes with Ukyo. "Uchan," she said, "what I know or don't know, it doesn't matter. I made a promise to my mother. And And I don't go back on my promises. Not ever. So whether I like it or not, I'm going to be a girl for the rest of my life. And that's just the way it is."
        Ukyo sighed.
"Ranchan, I don't want to be your husband, okay? I want to be your wife. I've dreamed of being your wife, since we were young. But more than anything, Ranma, I want you. Regardless."
"Uchan," Ranma said, "it won't work. I can't fall in love with another girl."
Ukyo's eyes momentarily widened. She turned the phrase 'another girl' over in her head. Did it indicate that, on a subconscious level, Ranma already thought of herself as a girl? Or did it mean that Ranma was already in love with someone else? But that could only mean Akane, and despite their engagement, Ukyo had detected nothing more than friendship between the two.
But if Ranma really remained a girl... could Ukyo love another girl? The thought made her cringe. And yet, when she looked in Ranma's eyes, she didn't see a girl. She only saw Ranma.
Ukyo sighed. Ranma was so wishy-washy and indecisive when it came to matters of the heart. A guy should be more assertive, Ukyo thought. A guy should take the initiative, and sway the girl's heart by declaring his love. But if she waited for Ranma to make a move, she might wait forever.
Enough! If Ranma couldn't be a man, then it was up to Ukyo to be one....
I don't want you to take this the wrong way," Ranma said, "but...."
Ukyo kissed Ranma. It was quick but passionate, and not at all what Ukyo might have expected from kissing a girl. As she pulled away, Ranma looked at her in shock.
        "Ukyo?" Ranma whispered.
Ukyo looked into her eyes a moment longer, then looked away, her face flushing red.
"Forgive me, Ranma, I... I don't know what came over me. I... we should try to find a way out of here."
